Cuppa Tech happens every month at Hastings and Flaxmere Libraries. Whether you need help with email on your new phone, finding out how to skype or using government websites, friendly library staff can help you learn get going on your device. One-on-one tutoring and a cup of tea while you wait your turn can help take the stress out of learning about tech. Here's what some people had help with at our recent session at Hastings Library.

  • An elderly lady was going to spend her day catching the bus to Napier, walking to the IRD and queuing to ask them to print out forms and information – but can now get into MyIR and print everything she needs at the library.
  • A dragon movie lover can search for movies and watch without having to wait for a grandchild to come over and set things up for her.
  • A lady with shaky, arthritic fingers can open her phone with one fingerprint touch instead of having to struggle with a passcode.
  • A couple have the confidence to recognise dodgy emails and messages and how to respond so they don’t get scammed.

Leaving with written instructions, some practice under their belt and the confidence to do these things independently makes such a difference for our customers. Others found out how to:

  • take a video and then transfer it onto a laptop;
  • send photos to a friend;
  • find the Play store, search for useful apps and download onto a phone;
  • open PDFs and send emails to the library printer;
  • connect to wifi at the library and at home;
  • set a Kindle up to do Speech to Text;
  • add and use Siri on a phone.

Cuppa Tech is a great opportunity to solve your digital questions and have a laugh as you go. Bring your own device and pop in to the session that works best for you:

  • Flaxmere Library on the second Thursday of the month from 10:00am to 12:00pm, or
  • Hastings Library: 10:00am to 12:00pm on the last Thursday of the month.
