She Had a Name, Too! - Six Great Reads for Spring

YH Sept 252

While there hasn’t been a noticeable increase in the publication of books on the theme of ‘women closely linked to famous men’ there has been a rise in our readers’ interest in the lives behind the centre stage.

This month our Young @ Heart readers reviewed several interesting titles that documented and explored the unsung personalities alongside some Big Names.  See if you can work out which book is about whom… (Psst! Don’t look too hard at the book covers.)

Titles:
First Lady by Sonia Purnell
The Paris Wife by Paula McLain
Hidden Portraits by Sue Roe
Agent Sonya by Ben Macintyre
The Tiger Queens by Stephanie Thornton
Josephine’s Garden by Stephanie Parkyn

Descriptions:
The Empress of France who cultivated beauty and power alongside Napoleon
Six women woven into the life and canvases of Picasso
The Cotswold housewife/Soviet spy handler who channelled Britain’s atomic secrets from Klaus Fuchs
The steadfast partner who stood beside Winston Churchill in war and peace
The wives, mother, and daughter who shaped the destiny of Genghis Khan
The first love and literary companion of Ernest Hemingway

Take yourself on a voyage of exploration with any of these great books!

Young @ Heart book group meets on the first Thursday of the month, usually at Havelock North Library, or sometimes a cafe - ask at the library for more details.
