Borrowing Te Tukunga

Here is some basic information about a few of the ways you can borrow items as a member of the Hastings District Libraries.

Choose your items and bring them to the Issues Desk with your library card.

We cannot issue without your card, although we may hold items up to three days, to give you time to come back with your card.

There is a limit of 25 items that can be borrowed at any one time.

  • Items borrowed from Hastings, Havelock North or Flaxmere Libraries may be returned to any of these three libraries.  We will check them in and return them to the library where they were borrowed.
  • Afterhours Returns - all items may be returned through the after-hours bins located at all three libraries.
  • Napier and Taradale Returns - items borrowed from Napier or Taradale Libraries can be returned to any of our three Hastings District Libraries.  We will return them to Napier for you, but please be aware that items will NOT be checked in until they arrive in Napier Library. This service is twice a week only, so allow for delays (4-5 business days) before your books are taken off your record. Please use this service at your own risk as any late charges are your responsibility.
  • Interloans - items borrowed through the Interloan service must be returned to the library that issued them to you — i.e. one of our Hastings District Libraries. We will check them in and return them to the supplying library.

Renewals

You are welcome to renew items in person, by phone +64 06 871 5000 or by  logging in to your library account. Items may only be renewed once. There is no charge for renewing an item, but note that overdues and rental charges may apply.

An overdue item may be renewed. However, an extended loan charge will be added to your library account. This will be calculated from the overdue date until the renewal date.

Any extended loan charges accrued at the date of renewal will remain on your card until paid.

Holds

You can place a hold on an item through the HDL Catalogue, either in the library or from home.  Or ask a librarian to place a hold for you.

When the  item arrives in the library you will receive an email or a letter in the mail. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date.

Call in to the library with your card to have your hold issued. Items must be collected within 10 days (wait times for holds will vary).

Charges do apply for holds.

For queries about holds, contact the Hastings District Libraries on +64 06 871 5000.

Interloans

If we do not hold an item we can try to borrow it for you from other libraries on Interloan. If the item you are seeking can be found at another library, you can fill in an Interloan Request Form.

You must be a member of the Hastings District Libraries to make an Interloan request.

What can I request on Interloan?

  • Books (although popular new books may not be immediately available)
  • Photocopies of journal/magazine articles
  • Please talk to the Interloans Librarian at Hastings Library before requesting the following items, as there is limited availability for these:
  • Music scores
  • Car manuals
  • Theses
  • DVDs, videos,
  • Music CDs
  • Microfilms

Charges do apply for Interloans.

Self Check Machines

web page imageSelf Check Machines are available at all three libraries.

These may be used for issuing all non-rental items.

A receipt listing the items borrowed is issued at the end of the transaction.

Reserves need to be collected from the Issues desk.

If you have a message on your card or charges over $10.00 you will need to talk to staff at the Issues desk.

If you have charges under $10.00 on your library card you may pay these by EFTPOS at the Self Issue Machines.

Please ask for a demonstration the first time you use a Self Check Machine.

Damaged Items

All items are checked on return and damaged items separated out, then further assessed. A decision is then made as to whether it is suitable to be returned to the collection or be discarded and replaced.  Any items with water damage, other liquid, food stains or bodily fluids are not returned to the collection. Water damage, however minimal, can often result in mouldy pages. As per membership terms and conditions, if an item is damaged while in your care you may be liable for costs.
