Māori Collections

We have an extensive collection of Māori booksEach of our three libraries has an Adult Māori Section and also a Junior Māori Section.  In Hastings War Memorial Library the Adult Māori Section has both reference and lending collections and is located on the ground level overlooking Civic Square and Ngā Pou o Heretaunga.

These collections contain items of cultural, historical, social and language significance for all of Aotearoa. Emphasis is given to any material of a local nature, particularly Ngāti Kahungunu.

The kaupapa is to provide books and other materials which foster the cultural needs of Māori and promote an understanding of Māoritanga in the community.

As more items are published, including bilingual and Māori language publications these are added to the collections.

As well as books, the Māori Collection in Hastings and Flaxmere Libraries include:

  • Newspapers
  • Magazines
  • Posters
  • Audio visual material - mainly Te Reo

At Havelock North Library this material is shelved with other like items, e.g. Māori magazines in the Magazines Section.

Māori Music CDs are held with the CD collections in Hastings Library.
