HDL korero with kuri 2026 web head

Kōrero with Kurī is a reading to dogs library programme open to all ages running after school during the school term. It is designed to paws-itively engage tamariki, rangatahi and their whānau in the library space and encourage a love for books with the help of a friendly, sociable kurī.

In partnership with Canine Friends Pet Therapy, you can enjoy a 10-minute session reading aloud or simply having a kōrero with a calm and cuddly four-legged friend and their handler.

When and where?

Hastings War Memorial Library, Havelock North Library and Flaxmere Library
10-minute sessions from 3.15 - 4.15pm  |  See calendars below for dates

No bookings required. First in, first served.

Why Read to Dogs?

Bring along a book or choose one from the library shelves and enjoy reading at your own pace. Reading to dogs isn’t just fun – it’s a great way to build literacy, confidence and self-esteem in a relaxed, pressure-free environment. After all, dogs are patient, non-judgmental listeners who won’t mind if you stumble or skip over a word.

More Than Reading

Our fluffy friends also provide comfort and stress relief! That’s why these sessions aren’t limited to reading – if you’d prefer to simply chat, we welcome you along.

All dogs have been trained and assessed for health, safety and temperament, making them perfect companions for this programme.

Check out when our kurī will be here, and where!

Note: Calendar sessions for Korero with Kuri may be cancelled at short notice, so sessions aren't always guaranteed. Keep an eye out for updates.

  • Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must remain in the designated area during the entire session.
