Dirty Laundry by Roxy Emory and Richard Pink
After being diagnosed with ADHD in my thirties, I delved into research and discovered a Tiktok channel run by a couple, which cleverly taps into the quick, dopamine-driven nature of the platform. They’ve built a following of over half a million and published a book that I found invaluable.
As I read and highlighted useful passages—differentiating between insights for myself, my partner, and professional contexts—I was amazed at how clearly they explained ADHD from both perspectives. Their communication skills and concise explanations helped articulate thoughts I struggled to convey.
The book offers a simple understanding of how ADHD minds work and provides a forgiving, informative approach without being overly scientific. It doesn't promise a cure but serves as a tool for better expression and improved communication, especially for those with neurotypical loved ones.
Better Late Than Never by Emma Mahoney
I just finished reading this book about the author’s late-life diagnosis, and it really struck a chord with me! If you’re on a similar journey, I can’t recommend it enough. The author shares her life story, from her various jobs to her experiences with recreational drugs and how they impacted her differently than her friends. She also dives into her relationships, mental health struggles, and the diagnosis she ultimately faced. It’s such a heartfelt read that makes you feel like you’re not alone in this journey.
ADHD 2.0 by Edward M. Hallowell, M.D.
This book takes a more clinical and scientific approach, written by two doctors who really know their stuff. I found it to be a fantastic addition to my reading pile! When I picked it up, I was still navigating the diagnosis process and was eager to find ways to support myself without relying solely on medical interventions or professional guidance. Just to clarify, I’m not suggesting that anyone should skip out on medical treatment—it's just that sometimes getting a diagnosis can be a bit of a wait, and many people want to explore things they can do in the meantime or to complement their official treatments.
The great thing about this book is that it’s relevant for everyone—whether you’ve been diagnosed, think you might have ADHD, or if you have children or loved ones who do. It dives into the science behind ADHD, exploring why it exists, how it shows up, and how it’s diagnosed.
What I especially love is that it also shares insights from scientific studies about strategies that can help those with ADHD. From improving balance skills and leveraging your unique traits to dietary supplements and even a discussion about medications, it covers it all. While it leans more towards a science book than a memoir, it’s still super engaging and easy to read!
