Recommended Podcasts from 2024: Part Two

Best Podcasts 24 pt2

Our keen librarians had much to recommend so we continue our series showcasing our best podcasts for 2024:

Nothing is more riveting it seems than a true crime podcast. Library Li is recommending two true crime podcasts. The Deck which is based on cold cases in America has faces of victims placed on playing cards and sent into prisons. The idea is if a prisoner sees a face which they know something about, they can speak up. Each week The Deck picks a card and tells the story. Crime Junkie covers cases from across America (and elsewhere) in a way that’s not simply a money making venture. People reach out asking them to cover stories; or they find ones that didn’t get enough coverage.

The Australian newspaper has had a lot of successes with its true crime series and Miss Moneypenny is hoping that the truth is uncovered in the hunt for missing mother of two Bronwyn Winfield in the self-titled podcast. Amy recommends Rotten Mango, a true-crime podcast hosted by Stephanie Soo and her mysterious partner in crime. This podcast covers a lot of east Asian and international cases with her team of researchers. Filled with drama, these episodes are highly entertaining, particularly good for people who get sucked into true crime but also want to crochet or scrapbook at the same time.

Both Cole and Suzanna are enjoying season 5 of American history and foreign policy podcast Blowback. Series 5 features the story of Cambodia, Kissinger and the Khmer Rouge. Revisionist History is Malcolm Gladwell’s journey through the overlooked and the misunderstood and Eva says the topics are both interesting and random.

Mya tells us that for an engaging podcast for anyone who is curious about the past, look no further The Rest Is History. It makes learning about the past engaging and accessible and she particularly enjoyed the banter between the two main hosts Dominic Sandbrook and Tom Holland. It covers a wide range of historical events, figures and moments such as the history of comedy or the top ten eunuchs of history.

Telling a good story is one of the factors that make a good podcast and We’re All Insane chats with people who have been through something. Library Li explains it is normal people talking about things that effect more people than you might expect. Can be very triggering depending on the topic but they have warnings.

Story-telling interviews are a feature of our next two podcasts. Christine enjoys listening to the wide variety of stories from around America in The Moth. Julia Louis-Dreyfus, from Seinfeld and Veep fame, interviews older women who have attitude and wisdom in her podcast Wiser Than Me, one of Miss Moneypenny’s top podcasts for 2024.

Christine enjoys a good sporting podcast and recommends Fitter Radio and The Triathlon Hour for all things triathlon and Choose Strong for ultra-runner advice and general inspiration. New Zealand broadcaster, Dom Harvey, started his own podcast on running and it has now morphed into a podcast about people. Christine enjoys this goofy host and the diverse range of interesting interviews.

Our last recommended podcast is something a little different from what we have had so far. Kristen listens to The Colin and Samir Show. The premise is two YouTube creators and podcasters break down the latest news in the creator economy from a creator’s perspective. An interesting deep dive into digital creators and platforms. Interesting for those who are content creators and those who are not. Kristen goes on to say that it turns out she will happily listen to the CEO of Spotify talk about the future of the platform for an hour, the benefits of using AI in content creation or an interview with a golfing YouTube channel that she has never heard about for hours at a time.

We hope our recommendations have helped you to find something new to listen to this summer.
