I usually don’t read much non-fiction but in the last few years, possibly partly due to Covid, I’ve been more interested in health books. Below are my favourites. (Click on the titles for catalogue information.)
Wellness by Jess Blair:
Jess Blair covers the basics – get enough sleep, eat healthy and exercise. She also covers more holistic health such as food, vitamins, exercises, the detoxifying home with recipes, lifestyle, stress etc. She states, “Everyday may not be good but there is good in every day.” She also quoted Theodore Roosevelt, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” I’ve also written down and underlined page numbers 190, 196 and 201 –can’t remember why – might be time to re-issue the book!
The Anxiety Survival Guide for Teens by Jennifer Shannon
I really enjoyed this book, so much so that I have re-issued the e-book version. It describes anxiety as a monkey mind which painted an instant brain picture of a monkey banging cymbals together. Jennifer says, “Monkey mind over-catastrophizes and overestimates the threat you are under and underestimates your ability to cope. In these situations it can be helpful to ask what did I do that was ok?” She also has a whole section on physical symptoms of stress and how they are actually your body prepping to be ready for a disaster or emergency (often unnecessarily). She states, “There is a beginning, a middle and an end to every emotion, including anxiety.”
This is It! by Amanda Mortimer
Okay confession time – I’m not sure if I actually finished reading this book – either way, this quote is pretty amazing. Amanda writes, “Every day that you’re alive the choices that you make contribute to the sum total of your life. So it’s up to you to really live this day, making powerful, dynamic choices." (Wow, she sounds inspiring - perhaps this need to go back on a To Read list!).
You Are What You Eat by Dr Gillian McKeith
This was a very interesting book in that it includes some physical signs of unideal health. For example, “A middle crack not reaching the tip (down the middle of your tongue) seems harmless enough but if you have one it means you have a weak stomach and your digestion is not what it should be. You are most likely nutrient depleted. (I read this before masks were mandatory and terrorized family, friends and colleagues asking to see their tongues!).
Dr Gillian is a big fan of Ginseng. Her book also includes quizzes + food and supplement plans for detoxing, weight loss and more. However she is not a fan of coffee or cheese and her supplement plans seemed a little over the top including such things as horsetail and wheat grass - blergh. Dr Gillian can also be found on Youtube.
