Iggy Pop has had a resurgence of interest in the last few years. With the passing of David Bowie and Lou Reed, he is one of the few originals still creating interesting work. Also, with vinyl being readily available, people can hear his original albums the way they were meant to be heard.
David Bowie, who co-wrote some of Iggy Pop's early songs, has rearranged them and brought them to a larger audience. ”China Girl” is one in particular but there are others with varying success. Other people have covered “Nightclubbing” and “The Passenger”, including Grace Jones.
So this book is mainly lyrics dispersed with interesting photos and a great layout. The quotes from other artists are small sound bites and don’t actually add a lot to the story. As a book of his lyrics it’s interesting but Pop's lyrics usually weren’t overly complicated.
I found the book slightly underwhelming. Vinyl recordings come with the lyrics, so a lot of it was quite familiar. Not entirely sure who this book aimed at but the fans will eat it up. Still worth a read, I just thought there might have been some more back stories. We don’t currently have a copy of Iggy Pop’s autobiography but we are trying to source one.
