Dropping in at Cuppa Tech

Cuppa Tech is the library’s drop-in tutorial service for anyone wanting to become better at managing their electronic devices and apps. Whether it’s using email or social media; online banking or shopping;  managing photos or downloading library books, our tech-savvy team will sit with you over a cuppa and help get you gain confidence.

There are two sessions per month: Flaxmere Library every second Thursday from 10:00 am to 12:00pm and at Hastings Library on the last Thursday of the month also from 10:00 am to 12:00. Just BYOD – bring your own device.

At our last session we had several people attend, each with a great range of questions about connecting with friends and family.

Two people learned to use WhatsApp – one person needed to know how to add phone numbers, tried a practice call with us, and then she was very excited as she successfully spoke with her friend in Atlanta.

Someone else wanted to know how to use Facebook Messenger. This person learned how to create a group chat with his family, then take a screenshot of information from an email, and send the screenshot to all the family at once.  They have a big event coming up soon, and this will make it a lot easier for him to communicate the important details without having to send them to each person individually.

We also practiced making a video call and regular phone calls so he could practice answering the phone without getting flustered.

Another thing this person was excited about was learning how to move icons around so that the things he used most – Text, Mail, Messenger - were all on the front page, easy to find.

One person wanted support as they navigated Facebook. How to find people and make a friend request, and how to accept or decline a friend request. They had a great time deleting some friends too. We talked about how to make posts, what information is safe to give out, privacy settings, and how to share your page with someone else. 

We love seeing people practice these kinds of skills so they can keep in touch in ways that work for them. So if you've got a technological question, or are struggling with that new phone or tablet, there's sure to be someone who can help you at Cuppa Tech.
