Checking In with Tea with Tales

Dec TWT

For our last meeting of the year, we enjoyed a Christmas morning tea, shared our most memorable Christmas presents and chatted about the books we had been reading.

We started with the second in Hilary Mantel’s King Henry VIII/Oliver Cromwell trilogy: Bring Up the Bodies. A good long read was the verdict. Two members were continuing with Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, enjoying them greatly.

Brilliant was the verdict on American Duchess: a novel of Consuelo Vanderbilt by Karen Harper. Another based on a true story and also a brilliant read: The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict.

Continuing with great reads was The Sextant by Brian Callison and another successful Reacher novel The Hard Way by Lee Child.

Dec TWT1

We had a several recommended non-fiction reads including the autobiography of British soldier and travel writer Wilfred Thesiger, The Life of My Choice. Neil Hanson’s The Dreadful Judgement took the reader through the Great Fire of London and on a lighter note the humorous book Do Let’s Have Another Drink!: the singular wit and double measures of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother has been enjoyed by several members. See It My Way tells the life story of senior correspondent with the BBC Peter White who was the second son born blind to sighted parents.

We finished on a high with Love Untold by Ruth Jones, a generational novel that has a mammoth twist at the end – worth reading was the recommendation.
