Nat Geo Kids – Kindling Children’s Curiosity Through the Holidays

Gale National Geo Kids2

If you’re keen to see your kids keep up their learning a little over the school holidays, encourage them to have a look at Nat Geo Kids. This is a child-friendly, visual and information feast put together by the good people at the National Geographic Society.

You can access Nat Geo Kids via the library website – just one of the many online resources you can use anytime, and you don’t have to be at the library either. Head to the website homepage and click on the Online Resources Quick Links button. Scroll down to Gale National Geographic Kids and with a click of the mouse you’re in.

You can select an article from the Nat Geo Kids Magazine to peruse, which has lots of fun features like Guinness World Records from the natural world, as well as puzzles and jokes, or lengthier articles, all beautifully illustrated with photos.

There are Nat Geo books – you may have seen some of them at the library – on all kinds of topics and for all ages. I bet that Animal Encyclopedia gets a fair bit of use and the photographs are amazing. Or put a topic into the search bar at the top of the page to narrow your search for information. You can select articles from the magazine, or books, or just look at pictures or videos.

Yes, there are videos! There were nine videos relating to the topic of bats alone, so you can see there will be dozens on all kinds of themes, from dragonflies to snakes, the Hubble telescope to glaciers as well as topics about conservation – there’s even a video on “green skyscrapers” (buildings that emit less CO2).

So this is obviously a great resource for when the kids have school projects; but there’s such a wealth of general interest material here perfect for idle browsing. And it’s interesting for adults too - although we’ve got also Gale National Geographic. Of course we do!
