Great March Reading from Tea with Tales

In the first week of autumn, we enjoyed scones and chocolate cake, shared what we liked most about autumn and chatted about the books we had been reading in the previous month.

We started with a short reading from The Bookbinder of Jericho by Pip Williams. Set in the time of the First World War the story centres around the female workers in the bindery department of Oxford University’s Clarendon Press. Reminiscences and stories of World War Two were exchanged around the table.

Two recommendations from last month, Robert Galbraith’s The Cuckoo’s Calling and The Huntress by Kate Quinn were enjoyed by members of the group.

New Zealand author Carl Nixon’s The Waters tells the story of three siblings in Christchurch trying to overcome challenges of living in a dysfunctional family.

Karen Harper’s historical fiction were enjoyed and recommended. In particular The Queen’s Secret a fictional account of the life of the Queen’ Mum.

Terry Hayes’ I Am Pilgrim was a fascinating and exciting read and gave some meaningful insights into Afghanistan.

Our only non-fiction read was Robert Hughes' The Fatal Shore - an epic of Australia’s founding. It details the early years of British colonisation of Australia and in particular the convict transportation system.

Two mystery writers finish off our reading for the month. The Monkeewrench series by P J Tracy (a pseudonym for an American mother-daughter writing team) and English crime writer Joy Ellis and her 14 books in the DI Nikki Galena series.

Tea with Tales is the library's book group for the vision impaired. They meet on the first Monday of the month at Hastings War Memorial Library. To find out more about the books from their March meeting, click on the titles for links to the library catalogue.
